How To Utilize Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Are Malas And How Do They Function?
Mala is Sanskrit's first word to refer to prayer beads. They are used to count mantra recitations. Malas are commonplace throughout Tibetan Buddhist communities all over the globe, tucked into wrists or hanging from fingers, accompanied by humming recitations of mantras like Om mani padme, Om tare tuttare ture, or om muni muni maha muniye soha. In Tibetan they are referred to as trengwa. It is common for Tibetan Buddhists to recite certain mantras thousands many times. It is also possible to use your rosary as a spiritual calculator. Even even if the mantra isn't recited, it can be used to relax your mind and assist in keeping it focused. The string is composed of 108 beads made from semi-precious stones or precious stones or seeds, wood bone, or wood is the most common type. Each time you work your way around the mala, saying an appropriate mantra for each bead, you are considered to having completed 100 mantra repeated. You can use the 8 additional beads to serve as "spares" to make up for any errors or miscounts that you might make. There is another head bead, one that is larger than the others and is also called a "guru bead." Some believe this particular bead is of special significance, as representing one's guru for example however, in reality it is actually the beginning point for the circuit and is not part of the total 108. Malas might have precious stones that are added at various intervals. For instance the turquoise, coral or. These can sometimes be added at intervals that can be counted, for instance, following 27 beads. Counter beads add another count to your overall beads count, which will be 111 instead 108. Also, there is a smaller, wrist-sized mala, made of 27 beads as an example, that is often employed when performing prostrations. The smaller mala size is wrapped around your wrist and repeated 4 times. Other configurations can be made such as 21 or 22 however this isn't a problem as long your mala is able to count.

Types of Malas
There are many types of malas, ranging from bone and ivory to sandalwood and lapis lazuli or crystal, or "Bodhi seed" (actually created out of Rudraksha seeds) or "lotus seed" (actually constructed from Rattan seeds). While we've read a lot of theories about the kind of mala that is suitable for this or another type of prayer, we don't believe that it's important as much what kind of mala you choose to use. We think that Tibetans generally don't make major distinctions between the kinds and applications of malas. Monks, nuns, and others generally use simple and inexpensive malas, such as wooden malas. You can use any kind of mala. It is best not to focus on the look or the value of your mala but rather focus concentrate on the spiritual practice of praying and reciting mantras. See the best Bodhi Seed Beads for info.

How To Hold And Count Your Malas
We'd like to make it clear, as Tibetan culture is known, that there aren't any specific rules regarding malas, or the way of counting your mantras. Everyone does it in a different way. There are common ways of doing things but these do not matter nearly so much as your intentions and attitude to prayer. You're doing what is right if you pray in your heart and use your mala. While the majority of sources recommend keeping your mala with one hand however, certain Tibetans recommend having it in the other. It is possible to have a prayer tool in one hand, and a mala the other. It is recommended to hold malas in the left hand and the tool for prayer in your right. When using your mala, start with the first bead next to the "guru" bead. It is possible to hold the bead between your thumb and index finger, and repeat your mantra, either quietly or loudly. Then, you can move to the next bead and repeat your mantra a second time. When you get to the Guru bead, you'll have completed 100 mantras. Most Tibetans will not abandon the guru beads at this point. They simply change the mala to the opposite direction, and then begin a new cycle that includes 100 mantras. We're not sure why this is. It's more habit than anything else.

Caring for your Mala
When you use your mala to perform mantra recitations or mantras, bring it to teachings or even have it blessed with your spiritual guru, it will be given spiritual significance. Although it is not as holy as a Buddha's scripture or statue however, it's something we value. It is not a good idea to throw it away, put it on the floor, or add mundane objects to it. Tibetans wear their malas around their necks, or around their wrists. These malas are not meant to be used as a necklace. Hang it high up, close to the altar if it isn't in use for a long time or while you sleep. It's kept on a specific shelf beneath our altar. It is up you to decide what you do with it.
